About I-75

Also known as Alligator Alley.

From Hialeah, FL (SR 826) to Sault Ste. Marie, MI (I-75 BL)

Interstate 75 is a major north-south route running about 1,786 miles from the Miami area in South Florida north to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, near the Canadian border. It crosses six states and connects a long string of major cities, including Tampa, Atlanta, Knoxville, Cincinnati, Toledo, and Detroit. The route is one of the busiest long-distance corridors in the eastern United States and serves heavy freight, commuter, and seasonal travel.

In Florida the route includes the Alligator Alley section across the Everglades between the Gulf Coast and the Miami area, a long and remote stretch through wetlands. From there it runs north through Tampa and into Georgia, climbing through Atlanta and over the southern Appalachians into Tennessee. It continues through Kentucky and Ohio, crosses into Michigan, and runs north through Detroit and Flint before reaching the Straits of Mackinac and its northern end at Sault Ste. Marie.

The corridor ties together the Southeast, the industrial Midwest, and the northern Great Lakes region. Near the Straits of Mackinac the route approaches the Mackinac Bridge corridor, although the bridge itself carries a separate route. Across its length the road links many of the largest metropolitan economies of the eastern half of the country.

History

Interstate 75 was designated in 1957 as part of the original Interstate system and built in stages over the following decades. The Alligator Alley section across the Florida Everglades was upgraded from an older two-lane toll road to full Interstate standards, including wildlife crossings, by the 1990s.
