About I-4

From Tampa, FL (I-275) to Daytona Beach, FL (I-95)

Interstate 4 crosses the central Florida peninsula for about 132 miles, connecting the Tampa Bay area on the Gulf coast with Daytona Beach on the Atlantic coast. It begins at Interstate 275 in downtown Tampa, runs northeast through Lakeland, passes through the Orlando metropolitan area, and ends at Interstate 95 near Daytona Beach. Despite its low even number, the route is diagonal and relatively short, functioning as the main inland connector across the middle of the state.

The highway carries some of the heaviest traffic in Florida, serving commuters, freight, and the large tourism economy centered on the Orlando attractions. Through Orlando it passes near the theme park district and the city core, where congestion has long been a defining feature. Outside the urban centers it runs through flat terrain of lakes, citrus country, and growing suburban development.

History

Interstate 4 was established in 1965 and was built to tie the Tampa and Daytona Beach regions together across the center of the state. Its odd-looking low even number reflects its placement in the southeastern corner of the national grid rather than any long east-west span.

Major reconstruction projects, including the large I-4 Ultimate rebuild through the Orlando area, have repeatedly widened and modernized the corridor to handle sustained growth in population and tourism.
