About I-16
Also known as Jim Gillis Historic Savannah Parkway.
From Macon, GA (I-75) to Savannah, GA (I-95)
Interstate 16 is an east-west route entirely within Georgia, running about 167 miles from Macon in the center of the state to Savannah on the Atlantic coast. It begins at Interstate 75 in Macon and ends near Interstate 95 and downtown Savannah, providing the main direct connection between the central Georgia fall-line region and the coast. It does not connect to any other state.
The highway crosses the gently rolling coastal plain of southeastern Georgia, passing through long stretches of pine forest and farmland with relatively few large towns between its endpoints. It serves as an important freight route to the Port of Savannah and as a hurricane evacuation route for the coastal region. Dublin and Statesboro lie within reach of the corridor along its course.

History
Interstate 16 was designated in 1962 and built to connect Macon with Savannah across the middle of Georgia. It carries the honorary name Jim Gillis Historic Savannah Parkway along its length.
The route was constructed through largely rural terrain and has remained a relatively low-traffic Interstate outside its urban endpoints, though it is critical for port freight and coastal evacuation.
