About I-94

Also known as Edsel Ford Freeway, Dan Ryan Expressway, Bishop Ford Freeway, Kennedy Expressway.

From Billings, MT (I-90) to Port Huron, MI (Canada border)

Interstate 94 is an east-west route running about 1,585 miles from Billings, Montana, to Port Huron, Michigan, across seven states. From its western end at Interstate 90 in Billings it crosses the plains of eastern Montana and North Dakota, passing near the badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park, then continues through Fargo and across Minnesota to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. From there it runs through Wisconsin to Milwaukee and Chicago, then around the southern end of Lake Michigan and across Michigan to the Canadian border.

The western half crosses open prairie and farmland, with long stretches between the major cities of the northern plains. East of the Twin Cities the route becomes increasingly urban, serving Madison, Milwaukee, and the dense Chicago area before crossing northern Indiana into Michigan. In Minneapolis it crosses the Mississippi River, and in Michigan it links Detroit with the eastern end of the route.

Interstate 94 is unusual among long Interstates in connecting directly to Canada at its eastern end, where it meets the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron. It carries heavy freight and regional traffic across the northern Midwest, linking a chain of major Great Lakes cities with the agricultural plains to the west.

History

Interstate 94 was designated in 1957 under the federal Interstate program and built in segments over the following decades across the seven states it crosses. Construction through the Twin Cities displaced the historic Rondo neighborhood in Saint Paul, an impact that has been widely studied in later years.

The route was assembled into a continuous freeway across the northern plains and the Great Lakes states, terminating at the international crossing to Canada at Port Huron.
