Interstate 65 is a north-south route running about 887 miles from Mobile, Alabama, on the Gulf Coast north through Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana to Gary, Indiana, near Lake Michigan. It passes through Montgomery and Birmingham in Alabama, Nashville in Tennessee, Louisville in Kentucky, and Indianapolis in Indiana. The route connects the Gulf Coast with the southern shore of Lake Michigan in the Chicago metropolitan region.

The southern section links Mobile and the Alabama state capital at Montgomery with the industrial center of Birmingham. The route then crosses into Tennessee at Nashville and continues to Louisville at the Ohio River, before running north through Indianapolis to its end near Gary. It serves a string of major state capitals and metropolitan areas along the central interior of the eastern United States.

Interstate 65 carries heavy freight and intercity traffic between the Gulf Coast and the Great Lakes industrial region, with substantial commuter volumes near Birmingham, Nashville, Louisville, and Indianapolis. It is one of the principal north-south Interstates serving the interior South and Midwest.
