About I-74
From Davenport, IA (I-80) to Carolinas segments
Interstate 74 exists as two disconnected pieces, one in the Midwest and one in the Carolinas, that share the same route number but are not joined. The longer western piece runs about 220 miles from near Davenport, Iowa, southeast across Illinois and Indiana to Cincinnati, Ohio, serving cities such as Peoria, Bloomington, and Indianapolis along the way. The eastern piece runs through parts of North Carolina and into South Carolina, where it is still being developed in segments.
The Midwest section forms a useful diagonal connection across Illinois and Indiana, linking several mid-sized cities with the larger Interstate network and ending near Cincinnati. The Carolinas section is being assembled along upgraded highway corridors and is intended to eventually form a longer route, but for now it appears as scattered signed segments. The total signed mileage of both pieces is roughly 520 miles.

Interstate 74 was designated in 1958, with the Midwest portion built through the 1960s and 1970s. The Carolinas portion was added later as a separate corridor and continues to be developed by upgrading existing highways to Interstate standards.
