North Carolina Piedmont corridor
About I-73
From Greensboro, NC area to Rockingham, NC area
Interstate 73 is a developing north-south route in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, currently signed along about 90 miles of highway in the central part of the state. The completed portion runs through the Greensboro area and south toward the Rockingham region, following corridors that have been upgraded to Interstate standards over time. The route is planned as part of a longer corridor but presently exists only within North Carolina.
The signed sections serve the Greensboro metropolitan area and connect it with points to the south, using existing and rebuilt freeway alignments. Because the route is still being assembled, Interstate signage has appeared on individual segments as they meet the required design standards. The corridor is intended to improve north-south travel and freight movement through the central Piedmont.

History
Interstate 73 was first signed in North Carolina in the 2000s, with additional segments designated through 2008 and beyond as the corridor was built out. The route is being assembled by upgrading existing highways and constructing new freeway sections rather than completed all at once.
