About PRI-1

Also known as Autopista Luis A. Ferre (PR-52).

From San Juan, PR to Ponce, PR

Interstate PRI-1 is the principal Interstate-designated corridor in Puerto Rico, running roughly between San Juan on the north coast and Ponce on the south coast. It is carried largely by Primary Route 52, the tolled Autopista Luis A. Ferre, which crosses the mountainous interior of the island to link the two largest urban centers on opposite coasts.

The route climbs from the coastal plain near Ponce into the Cordillera Central and descends toward the San Juan metropolitan area, providing the main high-speed connection across the island. Because it underlies an existing toll expressway, PRI-1 is not posted with Interstate shields and is known to drivers by the names and numbers of the Puerto Rico highways it follows.

As one of Puerto Rico's unsigned Interstate routes, PRI-1 exists to qualify the island's expressway network for federal Interstate funding rather than to create a new road. It anchors the territory's small Interstate system and connects with the other PRI routes in the San Juan area.

History

Puerto Rico's Interstate routes, including PRI-1, were designated in 1965, overlaying Interstate numbers on the island's developing expressway system so that those roads could receive federal Interstate aid. The designations were applied to existing and planned toll expressways and were never signed with standard Interstate markers.
