About A-4
From Anchorage area to Seward/Soldotna area
Interstate A-4 is an unsigned Alaska Interstate route of roughly 324 miles that follows the George Parks Highway between the Matanuska-Susitna area near Palmer and Fairbanks. It forms the central interior corridor of the state, passing the corridor near Wasilla and continuing north through the broad interior toward Fairbanks.
As with the rest of the Alaska program, A-4 carries no Interstate shields and is known by the name of the underlying highway. The route is largely rural and built to standard highway rather than freeway design, although some segments near Wasilla meet freeway standards.
The designation brings the main north-south interior connection into the federally aided Interstate system, supporting the heavily used link between the Anchorage region and Fairbanks by way of the George Parks Highway.

History
Interstate A-4 was designated in 1976 as one of Alaska's four unsigned Interstate routes. The number was applied to the existing George Parks Highway to make the corridor eligible for federal Interstate funding without changing its signage.
