About I-84
Also known as Banfield Freeway.
From Portland, OR (I-5) to Echo, UT (I-80)
Interstate 84 is the western highway of that number, an east-west route running about 770 miles from Portland, Oregon, to a junction with Interstate 80 near Echo, Utah. It leaves Portland as the Banfield Freeway, then runs east along the south bank of the Columbia River through the Columbia River Gorge for many miles, passing Hood River and The Dalles. Beyond the gorge it crosses interior Oregon and enters Idaho near Ontario.
Through Idaho the route serves the Treasure Valley cities of the Boise metropolitan area, including Caldwell, Nampa, and Boise itself, then continues southeast across the Snake River Plain past Twin Falls. It enters Utah in the northwest corner of the state and runs down toward the Ogden area before turning into the mountains to reach its eastern end at Echo.
For long stretches the highway parallels U.S. Route 30 and traces parts of the historic Oregon Trail, following the same river valleys and high plains that guided overland travelers. It is the principal freeway connecting the Pacific Northwest interior with the Wasatch Front and the wider Interstate network in Utah.

History
This western Interstate 84 was designated in 1957 and built over the following years across Oregon, Idaho, and into Utah. Earlier the corridor carried other route numbers before the modern I-84 designation was applied to the full length.
Construction followed established highway corridors along the Columbia River and the Snake River Plain, replacing older U.S. routes and completing a continuous freeway from Portland to its junction with Interstate 80 at Echo.
