About I-895
Also known as Harbor Tunnel Thruway, Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Thruway.
Interstate 895 is a three-digit auxiliary route of Interstate 95, with an odd prefix digit marking it as a spur or connector. The main instance is in Maryland, where Interstate 895 is the Harbor Tunnel Thruway, a toll route of about 11 miles running between two points on Interstate 95 in the Baltimore area. It crosses the Patapsco River estuary through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, providing an alternate harbor crossing to the parent route's Fort McHenry Tunnel.
A second instance existed in New York, where Interstate 895 was the Sheridan Expressway, a short connector in the Bronx between the Bruckner Expressway, Interstate 278, and the Cross Bronx Expressway, Interstate 95. That route was downgraded from Interstate status in 2017 and converted into a surface boulevard, with the work completed by the end of 2019, so it no longer carries the Interstate 895 designation.
The Maryland Harbor Tunnel Thruway remains the principal instance. As a tunnel crossing that begins and ends on Interstate 95, it serves as a connector that distributes harbor traffic, consistent with the spur or connector role of its odd prefix digit.
