About I-87 (NY)

Also known as Major Deegan Expressway, New York State Thruway, Adirondack Northway.

From New York, NY (I-278) to Champlain, NY (Canada border)

This Interstate 87 is the New York route, a north-south highway running about 333 miles entirely within the state from New York City to the Canadian border at the Quebec line. It forms most of the main route between New York City and Montreal and is made up of three distinct named highways joined into one Interstate.

At its southern end the route follows the Major Deegan Expressway through the Bronx, then continues north as the New York State Thruway from the New York City area to Albany, serving Newburgh, New Paltz, Kingston, and Catskill in the Hudson Valley. North of Albany it becomes the Adirondack Northway, running through Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, and Plattsburgh as it skirts the Adirondack region toward the border.

The highway crosses a wide range of country, from the dense urban core of New York City through the Hudson Valley and up into the forested North Country. At its north end it continues into Quebec as Autoroute 15 toward Montreal, making it a key international travel corridor.

History

This Interstate 87 was designated in 1957 and assembled from the Major Deegan Expressway, the New York State Thruway, and the Adirondack Northway. The Thruway portion predated the Interstate system and was incorporated into the route.

The Adirondack Northway was built through the late 1950s and 1960s, completing the continuous link from New York City to the Canadian border and drawing both praise for access and opposition over its passage near the Adirondacks.
