About I-78

From Union Township, PA (I-81) to New York, NY (Holland Tunnel)

Interstate 78 is an east-west route running about 145 miles from Lebanon County in eastern Pennsylvania across New Jersey to New York City. It links the Harrisburg region indirectly with the New York metropolitan area, passing through the rolling country of eastern Pennsylvania and the suburbs of northern New Jersey. The route is a major commuter and freight corridor approaching the largest metropolitan area in the country.

From its western end in Pennsylvania the road runs east through the Lehigh Valley near Allentown, crosses the Delaware River into New Jersey, and continues across the northern part of the state through Newark toward New York. It enters New York City and connects to the Holland Tunnel, which carries traffic under the Hudson River into Manhattan. The eastern portion is among the most heavily traveled sections of highway in the region.

History

Interstate 78 was designated in 1958 and built in stages over the following decades. A long-disputed gap in the New Jersey hills was among the last sections completed, finished in the 1980s after years of routing controversy.
