About I-195

Also known as Julia Tuttle Causeway.

Interstate 195 is a three-digit auxiliary route of Interstate 95, with an odd prefix digit identifying it as a spur or connector. The number is reused in several eastern states. In Florida, Interstate 195 is a short east-west connector of a few miles that links Interstate 95 in mainland Miami with Miami Beach, crossing Biscayne Bay on the Julia Tuttle Causeway, named for the early Miami land owner and developer often called the mother of Miami.

In Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Interstate 195 is a longer east-west route that begins at Interstate 95 in Providence and runs east across southeastern Massachusetts through Fall River and New Bedford to a junction with Interstate 495 in Wareham. In Virginia, Interstate 195 is a short urban route in Richmond, locally called the Beltline Expressway, connecting State Route 195 near downtown with Interstate 64 and Interstate 95 on the north side of the city.

Each instance acts as a metropolitan connector tying Interstate 95 to a nearby downtown, waterfront, or expressway, rather than forming a complete loop.

History

The Florida route opened in the early 1960s as part of the development of expressways serving Miami and Miami Beach. The Providence route originally carried an Interstate 95E designation in the late 1950s before being renumbered to Interstate 195, and it was relocated onto a new southerly alignment in a major project completed around 2010 that freed up downtown land. The Richmond Beltline Expressway opened in 1975.
